Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic editor, newsletter writer and strategist to lead community engagement for the San Antonio Report, a nonprofit online news organization covering community news in the city of San Antonio. This position also requires soliciting, editing and curating commentary content. This journalist will also represent the San Antonio Report’s nonprofit newsroom at external events and community gatherings, making the case for our work to San Antonians and helping our newsroom better understand community needs. This is a full-time exempt position.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Soliciting and editing sponsored posts for content, style and grammar
• Editing news coverage for content, style and grammar
• Writing and curating content for our newsletters
• Writing and curating content to post on the organization’s social media accounts
• Reading and sorting commentary submissions by non-staff authors
• Soliciting commentary submissions and working with non-staff authors to create clear and concise content
• Soliciting photos and/or organizing photo opportunities with staff photographers

SKILL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 

• This newsroom leadership position requires at least one year experience gathering or producing news and information primarily online
• Excellent editorial judgment
• Strong writing, copy editing, line-editing, headline, summary and photo cutline writing, and organizational skills
• Knowledge of SEO best practices and AP Style
• Organized, technical problem solver and quick decision maker
• Enjoys working in teams and has excellent interpersonal skills
• Ease with/ability to learn new technology independently and quickly
• Comfortable adapting to changes in evolving industry and thrives under pressure
• Self-motivated, competitive spirit and assertive personality with ability to balance multiple competing projects and priorities
• Strong social skills, able to work with writers and editors to present their content in the best way
• Schedule flexibility (nights, weekends)
• Proficiency in WordPress, Canva and social media platforms 
• Spanish fluency is a plus

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

· Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field

Our nonprofit news organization, located in the country's seventh-largest city, offers competitive pay, full benefits and generous paid time off, and embraces a collaborative work culture.

The starting salary for this position is $50,000 and is commensurate with experience and skill set. Some of the benefits employees enjoy: 20 days PTO annually, 11 paid holidays and competitive benefits.
